Nando Stoecklin's vision for education: Quest-Based Learning

This is the translation of the text "Vision for a new education system" by Nando Stoecklin from the University of Teacher Education Bern. It's visionary and intriguing.

When I first found it and shared the link via facebook and twitter, some people in my network tried to understand it via Google Translator. It awakened their interest. So I asked Nando if we could translate and publish a version. Fortunately, he accepted. Her's the English text by our intern Alan Look, revised and approved by Nando. And on Nando's Blog, you'll find the original German version and a great video!

Unternehmergeist wird entdeckt

Discovering the entrepreneurial spirit! My ticket to getting involved in the world of education started with one, simple question: “How do we get more entrepreneurial spirit in this field?” My beginnings started with the Business@School Initiative at BCG. Years later, after having founded schools myself, I discovered NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship), where I'm now a board member. This organization consists of a great group of people who do excellent work in training teachers how to open up entrepreneurial perspectives for young people, mostly in schools in socially difficult areas. In addition, NFTE also runs Biz Camps during the holidays, where students ages 14 to 17 develop business ideas and pitch them to an adult jury. Here's an Interview with Kyra Prehn and Florian Schulz-Freywald of the German Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship about their recent BizCamp!

Lehrerbildung ist zu verschult und praxisfern

An Indian educator helped us get in touch: Susann Meyer was first introduced to our team by Kiran Bir Sethi of Riverside School and we were lucky to have her as an intern at playDUcation over the summer. Susann is a teacher-to-be studying in Jena and after her internship we intervieweed her about the state of German teacher education. Her wish: A more practical teacher education program that really prepares you to become a teacher.

Teacher Education in the Digital Age

Germany prides itself to be a land of poets and thinkers as well as a high-tech nation, but it’s not a country which boasts having high-tech classrooms. A 2010 report by InitiativeD21 shows that within the OECD it’s the country where computers are used least in the classroom. What does it take to turn this situation around? We think it’s not a question of buying more equipment, but rather one of teacher skills and mentality.

Ab in den Quest!

This blog post is about our prototyping in Germany and therefore in German. We will follow up with an update in English and with a bilingual re-work of the playducation homepage! Short summary: We had a first test quest with children and it's been fun and playducative! We're now searching for children, 10 to 14years old, in Berlin who want to test some other quests we're developing.
